Construction, hardware & finishes

What's inside a Doss cabinet

Door style and color are what you notice first. The box, the drawers, the hinges and the finish are what you live with every day. Here's how each of our three lines is built, part by part, so you can compare on facts.

Hinges & drawer glides

Soft-close hardware on every line

The hardware you never see decides how a kitchen feels every time you open it.
  1. 01

    Soft-close, built in

On Core, Flex and Peak, soft-close is part of the hinge and the drawer glide, not a bumper added later. Doors and drawers slow down on their own and close quietly.

  2. 02

    Full extension

Drawers come all the way out of the cabinet, so the back of the drawer is as easy to reach as the front.

  3. 03

    Six-way adjustment

Hinges adjust up and down, in and out, and side to side. We use that to line up every gap at install, and it's there if a door needs a tweak later.

Some corner cabinets, like lazy susans and pie-cut corners, use different hardware. We'll point those out in your design.

Cabinets 101

How cabinet finishes differ

Two cabinets can be the same color and wear very differently. What matters is the type of finish and where it was applied and cured.

Paint applied on site

Where it's applied
Brushed, rolled or sprayed in your home
How it hardens
Air-dries; timing depends on the product, temperature and humidity
Good to know
Easy to repaint later. The result depends on prep and the painter, and dust and humidity are harder to control than in a finishing booth.

Pre-catalyzed lacquer

Where it's applied
Sprayed in a finishing shop
How it hardens
The hardener is premixed; full hardness takes about 3–4 weeks
Good to know
Easy to spray and easy to touch up. How well it handles water and household cleaners varies a lot from one formula to the next.

Conversion varnish

Where it's applied
Sprayed in a finishing shop
How it hardens
Two-part; the hardener is mixed in just before spraying, and it's about 85% cured in two days
Good to know
Builds a thicker film per coat and generally holds up better to water and chemicals. Touch-ups are harder to blend.

UV-cured coating

Where it's applied
Applied on a factory finishing line
How it hardens
Hardens under ultraviolet light in seconds
Good to know
A hard, solvent-resistant surface that is fully cured before the cabinet is boxed. Works especially well on flat parts like doors.

What's on our cabinets

Core · Factory

UV-cured on the factory line

Paint or stain and the clear coat are cured under UV light at the factory, and the natural plywood interior gets a UV-cured coat too. Colors come from a set palette of the most-requested paints and stains.

Flex · Semi custom

Factory-applied, with color matching

Paints and stains are applied and cured at the factory, and natural wood interiors get a UV-cured coat. Have a paint color in mind? Flex can be matched to Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore colors.

Peak · Custom

Hand-applied, made to order

Each paint, stain or glaze is applied by hand on the hardwood you pick, including custom paint colors and glazes that don't come from a catalog. The inside of the box gets a UV-cured coat.

All three lines are finished before they leave the factory, so your cabinets arrive with a cured finish instead of being painted in your kitchen.

Questions

Construction & finish FAQ

Do all Doss cabinets have soft-close doors and drawers?

Yes. Core, Flex and Peak all come with soft-close hinges and full-extension, soft-close undermount drawer glides. A few corner cabinets, like lazy susans, use different hardware, and we'll point those out in your design.

Are your cabinet boxes plywood or particleboard?

Plywood. Core uses 1/2" plywood sides and a 1/2" plywood back, Flex uses 1/2" veneered plywood sides and a solid 1/2" plywood back, and Peak uses plywood and solid wood, built to your exact dimensions.

What finish is on Doss cabinets?

Core has a UV-cured factory finish, inside and out. On Flex and Peak, the inside of the box has a UV-cured coat too. Flex has a factory-applied paint or stain finish, with color matching to Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore colors. Peak finishes are applied by hand, including custom colors and glazes. Every line is finished before it leaves the factory.

Is conversion varnish better than pre-catalyzed lacquer?

Each has trade-offs. Conversion varnish is a two-part finish that cures faster and generally holds up better to water and household chemicals. Pre-catalyzed lacquer is easier to spray and to touch up, and some formulas get close to conversion varnish once fully cured. Ask what finish is used and where it's applied, and look at samples before you choose.

Can I see the hardware and finishes in person?

Yes. Book a showroom visit at 740 Dixon Springs Hwy in Riddleton, Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM, or request a Saturday. Bring photos of rooms you like and we'll walk through door styles, finishes and hardware with you.
